Painful Lessons

I see you now
Happy as you’ve ever been
Spending quality time
With another

You smile more
And are light on your feet
As beautiful as ever
I have seen you

I remember the days
When we smiled and laughed
Days that are
Too far in the past

Still the pain that I feel
Pales by comparison to
The pain and the hurt
I inflicted on you

Built up over time
Like a great wall
Some parts would crumble
But it would never fall

Now the wall is slowly
Eroding away
With a touch of another
Smoothing the sharp edges

You are molding yourself
Into who you want to be
A confident and beautiful woman
Who deserved much more from me

Yet I too am changing
Perhaps a little to late
Painful lessons
Twisting my fate
